Don't Twist it to Fit

I have a confession to make. In spite of the fact that I’m an ordained minister, I still find myself struggling at times to comprehend the Word of God. I read a chapter of Proverbs daily; this has been a habit for over 18 years now.

Since there are 31 chapters, I read the chapter that corresponds to the day of the month. This means I read the entire book 12 times a year; yet I forever notice something that didn’t catch my attention the month or even year(s) before. I may visit other books based on whatever devotional I’m reading, but since I can always use more wisdom and Solomon was known for his, I never seem to exhaust Proverbs.

Never fail, it always reveals new truths to me and convicts me in different ways. The Bible is alive and has the power to transform our lives if we’ll allow it to. It is medicine to our souls; however, medicine must be taken faithfully and on time in order to be effective. If you’re sick and only take it periodically, you can actually exacerbate your illness and end up with a superbug, one resistant to the cure.

Instead of dabbling in the Word just enough to twist it and make it fit your situation, dive all the way in and let it cover you completely in its healing waves. It can make you clean and wise; it has the power to shine light on all the dark crevices of your heart and bathe them in truth and conviction. Don’t manipulate the Word to fit your understanding; let it change your understanding and make you more like the One Who designed you and has a perfect plan for your life.
