Are You Filling Your Cup?

I have some precious friends who love coffee. I think if they were to get sick and require a transfusion, their blood type would be part blood and mostly caffeine. They no sooner finish one cup and they’re refilling it, all day long.

I’ve never been a coffee drinker; I prefer tea, but I can go weeks without a cup. When I was much younger, I lived on Coke. I could drink it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and in between. As I’ve aged, I need my sleep so water has become my beverage of choice. I’ve come to realize that our bodies are comprised of 80% water so it’s important to ensure we stay hydrated.

Half the time when I think I’m hungry, I’m actually thirsty. Not drinking enough water can cause headaches, foggy brain, crankiness, and tiredness. There are conflicting reports on how much water we should actually drink daily, so I just try to space out about 48-56 ounces before 7:00pm. Otherwise, I’ll be up all night long.

The point is that I have to keep my cup full. Just like I wouldn’t drive my car on an empty gas tank and expect to get far, I can’t push my body on an empty tank and expect to get far. There’s a spiritual correlation as well. We can’t expect to serve others unless we fill up our God tanks. We dry up and become empty.

We can see water bottles and measure the results physically. We pay for gas and can see the gauge on the dashboard move making it easy to tell when the tank is full. How can we tell when we’re full enough of God?

When serving is a joy and not a burden; when we can do it with our whole hearts and joyfully; when we represent Him and don’t need to tell everyone what we’re sacrificing to accomplish the work. Those are some telltale signs of a heart filled with the love of God and empty of self.

Have you refilled your cup today?
